Spring and Summer Severe Weather

Spring and summer are the times of year people usually associate with severe weather. Although floods, thunderstorms, and tornadoes can occur anytime throughout the year, they are more common as we transition from winter to summer. These hazards are more dangerous during the warmer parts of the year because people spend more time outside and are directly exposed to these events.

Some hazards, such as heat waves, only occur in the summer. A heat index chart can be used to help you determine when significant heat conditions could be dangerous. At these times you should limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and make sure you have ways to stay cool.  You should also learn to recognize the symptoms and take steps to Protect Yourself From Heat Stress.

Additional information can be found under the Floods and Tornadoes links in the left-hand column.
